Am I Crazy or is This Deck Good?

This just seems nuts. I keep playing my mono-green deck and it keeps winning. I’ve run several 2-man standards, winning a pack.  And I’ve even entered a few 8-mans, in which I’ve only ever gotten 2nd place, but that’s better than losing in round 1.  Here’s some of my latest matches, my next post will be the final list and an analysis of matchups with sideboarding plans. Maybe someone else can give it a try and see if it’s actually good or if I’m just having a streak of luck.

vs. UW Spirits

G1: I peeter out in the face of multiple vapor snags/mana leaks and he curves out.
G2: Drogskol Captain x2 + Lingering Souls x2 = I lose.
Lost. Games (0-2)

At this point I tilt and alter the sideboard to hate out the stupid spirits deck, which seems to be the only thing that my deck loses to.

vs. RGB Ramp (or Wolf-Run splash Black removal)

G1: He ramps while I beatdown. Overrun takes him to 1. ONE. Zenith wipes my board. Garruk + Dungrove refill my hand and now things are looking up. Overrun #2 seals the deal.
G2: I bring in the singleton Melira against his BSZ and it actually works! BSZ sits in his hand while green guys swing repeatedly.
Won! Games (2-0)

vs. Naya Pod

G1: He has what seems to be a poor land draw and I eventually get double Ooze and Overrun online.
G2: He has a much better draw but even Huntsmaster doesn’t save him from me having insane plays every turn until I Overrun for lethal.
Won. Games (2-0)

Some More Ooze Results

vs. Grixis Control:
G1: Ooze survives Whipflare… so does Dungrove!
G2: Grave Titan + Inferno Titan + Liliana is too much for me.
G3: Strangleroot Geist goes the distance, with some help from Oozy.
Won. Games (2-1)

vs. U/B something
G1: He tries to play around with Geist, Ooze+Dungrove show up, he concedes match.

vs. Heartless Summoning
G1: I have a lot of dudes. He gets 2x Wurmcoil. 😦
SB: -3 Garruk’s Companion, +3 Naturalize
G2: Overrun is working as intended. Nothing to see here.
G3: He gets an amazing draw with 2x Superion, Treasure Mage, Wurmcoil. No Summoning necessary.
Lost. Games (1-2)

vs. U/B Control
G1: Dungrove just gets bigger & keeps on swinging.
*Note: This is one of the only matches I side out Overrun*
SB: -4 Overrun, +3 Autumn’s Veil, +1 Naturalize
G2: him: “que paso?” me: “de nada.” He concedes.  WTF?
Won. Games (1-0)

vs. White Guys
G1: 2 Young Wolves vs. 2 Doomed Traveler. Wolves win.
He concedes match.  WTF.
Won. Games (1-0)

vs. GWB Tokens
G1: Day of Judgment the turn before I Overrun = bad.
G2: Double Virtue with 5+ tokens and me with no Overrun!
Lost. Games (0-2)

vs. Esper Control
G1: Curse of Death’s Hold is pretty good against my deck.
G2: Curve-out!!
G3: He removes everything but Dungrove. Fortunately, Dungrove is 5/5.
Won. Games (2-1)

vs. UB Infect
G1: He removes my guys but he blanks after drawing cards.
G2: He doesn’t seem to have much countermagic. My guys come through.
Won. Games (2-0)

vs. UW Delver
G1: He gets Stalker/Pike online, but double Dungrove gets there.
G2: Vapor Snag + my poor draw = loss.
G3: Turn 2 Dungrove = win. Supporting cast of characters helps.
Won. Games (2-1)

So this round of testing yields a 12-7 game record.  Interesting. About half of the matches were in the Tournament Testing room and the other half were in Standard 2-mans.

Also, here’s a Standard 8-man I jumped in:

Standard 8-Man:

Round 1 vs. Esper Tokens

G1: I keep a hand that’s just okay with Young Wolf, Dungrove and Insight. I lucksack into a Skinshifter, which is nice. Too bad I have to tap-out for Dungrove, but he has the Go for the Throat to kill Shifty anyway. Looks like he’s playing Black/White Tokens perhaps. Lilliana makes me discard, but I promptly attack her to 0 while filling my hand with Ancestral… I mean Insight. He’s running Tragic Slip, which is MEGA bad for me. He may actually be playing Esper Control on a bad draw. I hold off on Ooze but get out Dungrove #2 and promptly get a concession.

SB: -3 Prey Upon, +1 Garruk, +2 Fresh Meat (I have him pegged as Esper Control. We shall see…)

G2: I keep a great hand. Unless he’s running Zenith. Oh no, he’s tokens!!! Sorin comes down, which is bad news for me. Thankfully I can attack him dead through the Vampire token.  But now I’ve extended a lot on board, which I don’t like. Ratchet Bomb comes down for him… twice. ugh. let’s see how he handles this next turn after I Zenith for a Dungrove… UGH, Gideon forces me to attack him. How silly. Gideon Falls to my horde and he pops Ratchet for 1 (after combat… misplay!). Lingering souls shows up to slow my roll.  I wonder if he has Mana Leak… He pops the 2nd bomb appropriately after I declare attackers, but only blocks Dungrove and falls to 7. Overrun seals the deal next turn if he doesn’t have a counter.  He concedes while facing down Dungrove, 3/2 Geist, 2/2 Young Wolf, Llelf, and Ooze.  Little did he know the savage beating that would come the next turn… but we shall never know!

Won!  Matches (1-0), Games (2-0).

Round 2 vs. Heartless Summoning

G1: Looks like he’s gonna win. He ramps into turn 3 Superion, Turn 4 Steel Hellkite. All I have is a Skinshifter and Predator Ooze.  Sigh.  My only hope is to Overrun enough to win. He copies my Ooze with Metamorph. I don’t draw the 5th land. This means I will lose shortly. And I do.

SB: I hate this deck because I don’t know how best to board against it. -3 Young Wolf, -1 Garruk, -1 Overrun, -1 GSZ, -1 Insight. +1 Prey Upon, +3 Naturalize, +3 Lure.

G2: I somehow have a hand with 2 Overruns in it, and I keep it. GSZ is just THAT strong. Especially when you need specific guys. GSZ #1 gets Dungrove #1. He drops Architect and superion. GSZ #2 gets Dungrove #2. I have land #5 in my hand.  he has boarded in Grafdigger’s Cage against my GSZ… ugh. He taps out for Solemn and I Overrun to wipe his board except for Trinket Mage and lands. I lose Dungrove #1 in the process.  He drops a summoning and will have Hellkite in play next turn.  I Overrun for the win but he has Tragic Slip to take out my Llelf and a Wurmcoil for next turn. sigh. This has got to be one of my tougher matchups.  Well, I now know that I have no more overruns left, which is bad. Sigh. I draw lands and lose.

Loss. 😦 Matches (1-1), Games (2-2).

It seem like this deck has a TERRIBLE matchup against Summoning. What can I do to shore up that matchup? wurmcoil is pretty darn tough for me to beat. Back to the drawing board on that one…
