New Brew – G/B Zombies Starting Point

I have heard several people contend that Green/Black Zombies will be the new “deck to beat” simply because of the power of Lotleth Troll combined with Rancor and the aggressive zombies from Innistrad block. I think they may be correct. Let’s jump right into zombies to get started!!

FYI, Decked Builder (the iPhone App that I use to brew when I don’t have all the cards on MTGO) is AMAZING! They completely updated their database with RtR as soon as the entire set was officiallly spoiled. I cannot gush enough about this app and I’ll be doing a review of it soon. Keep in mind that all of the images in this post are from Decked Builder.

Okay, so in our stock zombies list we have some interesting choices that I have made that others may have overlooked/found better. Slitherhead is a card that I think has great potential. Sure, he’s a little guy at 1/1, but you can discard him to Lotleth Troll and then he Scavenges for zero! That’s pretty tough to beat with a creature that you can also play turn 1 to get the zombie beats going. I would probably play him if I didn’t have a Lotleth or other 1-drop, but I would hold him if I had the troll. The question about Lotleth Troll is whether or not people are willing to play narrow answers to beat him. If they are, look-out!

Another interesting choice is Golgari Charm. I was actually torn between the charm and Murder (just for the straight-removal… man I miss Doom Blade). Golgari Charm is quite good on its own, though. It can take out opposing Detention Spheres and Oblivion Rings, it can save your team from Supreme Verdict, Bonfire, and that Mizzium Mortars card, and it kills multiple 1/1 tokens like Spirits or Soldiers! I think only time will tell on the playability of certain charms.

I’m also fairly certain that Sign in Blood is necessary.  If you’re pitching creatures to Lotleth Troll or losing them to combat/removal, refilling your hand could be vital. I considered Garruk Primal Hunter, but he may be too much green and/or too slow.  Also, the sideboard is always a work in progress on my brews and I change them up to the last minute before tournaments.

The prerelease is mere days away! I couldn’t be more excited for this set in both Limited and Constructed.  I will build the above zombies deck and probably one or two others for playtesting purposes, so if you see me at a prerelease let’s battle some Standard in-between rounds!

RAWR!!! Is this guy good enough?

Opening the Doors of the Brewery!

Alright! Enough pussyfooting around this sparkly new set! It’s time for some brewing shenanigans.

These seem like pretty decent starts to me! Your turn 1 guy could also be Avacyn’s Pilgrim or Arbor Elf. Sylesnya seems like it might not be so docile this time around!

Here’s a sample decklist:

4 Dryad Militant
4 Avacyn’s Pilgrim
4 Call of the Conclave
4 Selesnya Charm
4 Wayfaring Temple
4 Loxodon Smiter
2 Armada Wurm

4 Oblivion Ring
2 Rest in Peace
4 Rootborn Defenses

4 Temple Garden
4 Sunpetal Grove
3 Cavern of Souls
2 Gavony Township
6 Forest
5 Plains

Man, this is going to be an exciting time! As we ramp up to States (October 13th) and have this crazy set to build with.  I will be bringing the decklists and general ideas for some time to come!
